The Computational Biology Lab (DLab) is a transdisciplinary laboratory for basic and applied-research located at the Fundación Ciencia y Vida (FCV), Santiago, Chile.
DLab is associated to the Centro Interdisciplinario de Neurociencias de Valparaíso (CINV), a Millenium Institute housed at the Universidad de Valparaiso specialized in the study of the nervous system, including biophysicists, physiologists, neurobiologist, and experts on bioinformatics and molecular modeling. Its scope of study covers from the inner working of proteins that transduce signals from the outside world to the behavior of neural networks and of animals.
Research Focus
Headed by Dr. Tomas Perez-Acle, the main objective of DLab is to produce multi-scale computational models to get insights on the fundamental structure and dynamics underlying complex biological phenomena. To do so, we use and produce, computer-based simulation tools by combining advanced mathematical modeling, thermodynamics, physics and chemistry, together with high performance computing (HPC) techniques. Whilst our main goal is to produce a computational tool to conduct multi-scale simulation of biological systems, we also study fundamental biological processes at single scales.
As an important aspect of conducting scientific research, we are interested in the application of video game technologies (video game based learning) to the creation of novel learning tools.
